This sentence by Abraham Lincoln might be the headline for an ambitious project of the non-profit association “Campus Bitterfeld-Wolfen e.V.”. The aim of this association is to establish a learning-from-experience-world for children and adolescents of the region to create their own future, to get in contact with the requirements on skills and knowledge in different professions, to discover latest scientific and technological findings, to reflect their own desires, dreams and preferences concerning their future life. This exhibition and experience world shall be implemented in the abandoned eastern wing of the former laboratory and administration building of the Agfa works. The company “Agfa” was formerly a pioneer in the development of photographic films in Germany - like Kodak in the U.S.. The impressive headquarter building from the late 1930ies, simply called “building 041”, is located in the vicinity of Dessau, about 25 km away and accommodates in its already reconstructed central parts the town hall of Bitterfeld-Wolfen and a number of local companies. To let the project of an “edutainment center in 041” come true, the creativity of our students is needed. On more than 1500 m² floor area exciting exhibition spaces are to design, that attract young people to get closer to their own future in a playful and interactive way. While on one floor of the exhibition the technological and scientific innovations are the main topics of the presentation, on another floor the future of housing will be addressed and the outside space is reserved for a theme park on renewable energies. But there is also a very special source of inspiration in this project: even if it has similarities to the famous “Phaeno” in Wolfsburg, designed by Zaha Hadid, the budget is light-years away from this. Therefore it is an objective of the design, to reuse materials or use cheap constructions in a surprising way that allows the students to build as much as possible by themselves. Making something out of nothing – an everlasting challenge for architects and the challenge of the studio. less
